  • Abortion is defined as the premature exit of the products of conception (the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta) from the uterus or alternatively it is defined as the termination of pregnancy to a fetus weighing less than 500 gram.
  • Globally, 40-50 million abortions are performed annually.
  • In Kenya, there were 450,000 induced abortions in 2012.
  • In 2012, about 120,000 women in Kenya were treated at health facilities for complications arising from unsafe abortions.
