Acanthosis nigricans

  • It is a disease that is characterized by abnormal thickening and darkening of the skin, predominantly in the body creases.
  • The exact prevalence is unknown but some studies give the prevalence of 1% in whites and 13.3% in people with darker skin in America. It is more prevalent in obese people.

Thickened and darker areas of:

  • Skin on the neck
  • Armpit
  • Skin folds
  • Mainly clinical diagnosis
  • Tests to rule out possible causes such as blood sugar for diabetes, X-rays or even endoscopy for cancers.
  • Casal collar (in pellagra)
  • Rx of the underlying cause such as diabetes, obesity, polycystic ovarian disease.
  • Medications like corticosteroids; creams containing glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid; urea cream; retinoid such as tretinoin, tazarotene, or adapalene; dermabrasion; laser surgery
