The exact prevalence is unknown but some studies give the prevalence of 1% in whites and 13.3% in people with darker skin in America. It is more prevalent in obese people.

Tests to rule out possible causes such as blood sugar for diabetes, X-rays or even endoscopy for cancers.

Rx of the underlying cause such as diabetes, obesity, polycystic ovarian disease.
Medications like corticosteroids; creams containing glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid; urea cream; retinoid such as tretinoin, tazarotene, or adapalene; dermabrasion; laser surgery
