## Basic introduction

  • This is also known as solar elastosis or photoaging or dermatoheliosis
  • It is an accumulation of elastin in the dermis of the skin or conjunctiva when exposed to intensive sunlight over a long period
  • It is more common in people with fair complexions
Symptoms
  • Thickened, dry, and wrinkled skin or conjunctiva
  • Yellow skin coloration
  • Coarsely wrinkled skin in a photodistribution
  • Hyper or hypopigmented skin
  • Telangiectasias

  • Skin biopsy

  • Chronic actinic dermatitis
  • Drug-induced photosensitivity
  • Multiple actinic keratosis
  • Normal aging
  • Phytophotodermatitis
  • Solar lentigines
  • Solar elastosis due to smoking
  • Systemic amyloidosis
Prevention
  • Minimize sunlight exposure
  • Sunscreen
