Mode of Action
The functional group responsible for their activity is ―endoperoxide bridge‖. It is believed that iron from ingested haemoglobin of the para- site‘s victim reduces this bridge releasing a highly reactive free radical iron [IV] oxo species that rips apart the parasitic cells. It is a fast acting blood schizonticide that is metablised to dihydroartemesinin.
Since no clinical data is available for use of this drug during pregnancy, it should be used with caution in pregnant women if the potential benefits justify the potential risk to the foetus.
