It has been shown that Vitamin A supplement in the presence of its deficiency may reduce morbidity and mortality from certain diseases in children, including diarrhea and measles
Management of its deficiency: 100,000 I.U inj BD 2/7, Orally: 200,000 I.U daily x 2/7. The above is followed by maintanance dose of 25,000 I.U daily for a few weeks.

Mode of Action
It combines with opsin, which is the red pigment in the retina to form rhodopsin [visual purple] when it is in form of retinol. Rhodopsin is necessary for visual adaptation to darkness. Retinol and retinoic acid, being other forms of Vitamin A, are essential for growth of bone, testicular and ovarian function, for embryonic development, and for regulation of growth and differentiation of epithelial tissues.

||| Drug interactions:The intake of more than 25,000 Units/day of vitamin A may stimulate bone loss and counteracts the effects of calcium supplementation and may cause hypercalcaemia; concurrent use with tretinate or isotretinoin increases their toxicity.
