Mode of Action
A specific serotonin [5HT3] antagonist. [Emeto-genics like cytotoxic drugs and radiation damage gastrointestinal mucosa. This leads to the release of serotonin from the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract. 5-HT3 receptors are stimulated causing transmission of sensory signals to the vomiting center via vagal afferent fibers to induce vomiting. Granisetron binds to the 5-HT3 receptors hence blocking vomiting mediated by serotonin release].
