Dose: [IV solution of 10% ethanol in 5% glucose. The therapeutic concentration of ethanol is at least 100mg/dl that must be offered early before the me-tabolism of toxin].
Adult dose: IV or Oral; 50g initially then followed by IV infusion 5-10g/hr. For patients with history of long use of alcohol or those receiving haemodialysis, double use the dose. Child dose: IV or Oral; 0.6g/kg initially then followed by IV infusion 0.1 -0.2g/kg/hr.

Mode of Action
It is a competitive inhibitor of alcohol dehyrogenase with the alcohol-based poisons. This competition reduces the rate of the formation of toxic metabolites of methanol and ethylene glycol.
Chronic alcoholics may require higher doses of ethanol due to increased rate of metabolism (as results of enzyme induction)
Alcohol intoxication; sedation; ataxia; nausea; disorderly behaviour; hypoglycaemia and hiccups.
