Mode of Action
Due to its high level of liposolubility, it has selective neurotropism, making it ca pable of penetrating the lipoprotein barrier of membranes and binding to the neuronal structures rich in lipids, particularly the reticular activating formation. It has pharmaco- electroencephalographic effects that indicate an improvement in active wakefulness without any excitatory effect.
Studies in animals during gestation and lactation have revealed no evidence of any teratogenic effect, nor impairment of the somatic and behavioral development of offspring born to treated mothers. However, in the absence of clinical trials and of data demonstrating the safety of sulbutiamine in pregnancy it is recommended that it be avoided during pregnancy.
Hypersensitivity to sulbutiamine or any of the excipients, congenital galactosemia, galactose malabsorption syndrome or lactase deficiency.
Low incidence of irritability, insomnia, headache, vertigo or simple GI disturbances and possibility of skin allergy.
